In the name of the goats: exhibition in Havana by Martha Petrona Jimenez

Havana - The renowned artist Martha Jimenez, who lives in Camaguey, returned to the historic center of Havana on Tuesday, January 10, with the personal exhibition «In the name of the goats», exhibited until Thursday 26 at the Carmen Montilla gallery, located in Plaza de San Francisco de Asis.

There are 15 pieces among paintings, engravings and small format sculptures, which have as leitmotiv the mythological figure of goats, correlated between power and freedom of the feminine: "A way of representing the difficult of being a woman, always willing to sacrifice, simply a metaphor", said Jimenez to Opus Habana.

"I am a provincial artist, but I am very happy to return once more to Old Havana, where I did not exhibit since 2010," she said, referring to the exhibition "Longing", which was precisely organized by our publication in its former headquarters, at the Palacio de Lombillo, in front of the Cathedral Square.

The specialist, curator and researcher Maydelin Leiva, who works in the studio-gallery of the camagueyan artist, in her hometown, has expressed in the catalog text of this exhibition: "Martha's lambs are her sacrifice to God to purify the fault of the men. In this way she offers herself as shepherdess of the herd as a sign of renewal, repose and maternal welcome".

Alejandro Alonso, director of the Ceramic Museum and the 2016 Ceramic Biennial was present at the inauguration of the exhibition in Carmen Montilla gallery, whose inaugural words were in charge of the director of this institution, Norma Jimenez and Maydelin Leiva.

Just Martha was the winner of its last edition with the piece "Equilibrist". Elaborated in enamelled pottery, this sculpture of small format is one of the works shown to the public, next to "Holy water" and others similar, but realized in bronze.

Martha Jiménez has been awarded in several contests in the world, and she has been awarded the UNESCO Prize since 1997, for the Best Set of Works, for the four scenes of the Plaza del Carmen, which places her among the group of creators more linked to the rescue and preservation of the historical cultural heritage of Cuba.

Her works have been exhibited in numerous countries like Germany, Canada, France among others. She is an official member of LASA (Association of Latin American Studies) and she has held multiple personal and collective exhibitions.
