Artist Marta Jimenez raises her voice against gender violence

The artist Marta Jimenez expressed her support for the fight against gender violence, and thanked the Mundo A project of the branch of the University of the Arts in Camaguey for choosing her workshop studio to promote an initiative against that scourg.

On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which took place all over the world yesterday, this gallery located in the emblematic Plaza del Carmen of this city, hosted a concert by the “In Tempore” musical group and an exhibition by the prestigious sculptress and painter.

The female figure has been a thread running through most of Marta's creation, who told the Cuban News Agency (ACN) that there is still a lot of work to be done to elevate women and take their place in society, eradicate any type of violence, not just physical.

She commented that in her works she has tried to intend respect and fairness of roles, as in the case of her series “With the house on her back”, allegory of the burdens sustained by women in the home and the need to find family support, fundamentally of man.

The celebration for the anniversary was also the launch of Mundo A, which according to one of its founders, Mayra Gonzalez, scriptwriter and television director, struggles to achieve the concept of the first world not only from the economic point of view, but also from a culture of equity.

As an artistic and pedagogical initiative, it proposes actions that can reverse the inherited stereotypes of a hegemonic patriarchal tradition, and contribute to the education of children and youth from diversity and respect.

T
he International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women has been celebrated since 1999, and the date was chosen because on this day, but in 1960, the three Mirabal sisters, political activists of the Dominican Republic, were brutally murdered by order of the ruler Rafael Trujillo.
